Our edited version of the 2010 pistol permittee database is in about fifteen files the links to which are in a list at the bottom of this page. We consolidated the original, master database (which had been two files, "old" and "new") into one file, eliminated duplicate lines, and, in a tiny number of lines, added brief comments. The initial, resultig file was so huge that web browsers choked on it, so we broke it into smaller files, which are linked to at the bottom of this page.
Incidentally, Cryptome.org provides a geographical file, seemingly made by deleting (from the original database) all lines without a street address, then adding longitudes and latitudes. At the bottom of this page, we link to our edited copy of that geographic file.
Permittees are not necessarily government officers although many are. As far as we know, a pistol permit is a requirement to own a pistol in New York State regardless of whether the weapon is a CCW (concealed carry weapon).
Not every address below is a home address.
Some permittees have an address outside New York; for example, in the states of California and Florida, and in the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec. Examples follow.

On 27 December 2012, Cryptome reposted its file as "1016.zip New York State Pistol Permittees 2010." The original source of Cryptome's file is the master database of the Pistol Permit Bureau of the New York State Police. The NY state police's Pistol Permit Bureau sold the master database to the public.
The data in our pistol permit pages should be used carefully.
Many permittees are listed more than once.
Some addresses may be wrong. For example, we think that the entry which in our site is "KONRAD, KENNETH, N, 161 CENTRAL AVE, LEVITTOWN, NY, 11756" should have Center Lane, not Central Avenue. P> As another example there is an entry for PRE> JOHNSON,LYNDON,S 26 PORKY RYAN ROAD CODYVILLE [sic],NY,12918. /PRE> We think that the town above should be Cadyville, not Codyville.
There are many typographical errors. A common such error is that zero and the letter O wrongly replace each other. In the following examples, we sometimes supply the wrong entry alone, the wrong entry with our brief comment, or the wrong entry with our guess of what the right entry should be. The difference between zero and the letter O is obvious if the examples are read in Monaco font. If one searches for a name which is incorrectly spelled in the pistol database (because the name has a zero instead of the letter O, for example), the search will fail (a false negative). We don't know when typographical errors entered the data. They may have entered at more than one time and from more than one source. We guess that most errors entered the data while the data were still held by the government. How often do government officers get false negatives (in other words, the incorrect conclusion that a person does not have a permit) when doing name searches of a pistol permit database?
The pistol permit database is valuable but some entries contain errors.

The Bureau gets its information from local government agencies such as the NYPD and county clerks.
A permit is not registration. In much simplified form, a few distinctions follow. Applying for a permit is voluntary and precedes possession. Registration is mandatory and follows possession. One may have a permit for a weapon for which no registration is required. One may register a weapon for which no permit is required. Here we discuss getting information about permits.
Many, male C.O.s, security officers employed by security businesses, former police officers, and parole officers seem to have a permit. There are hundreds of addresses in the village of Ballston Spa, which is the county seat of Saratoga County, in zip code 12020. Although Ballston Spa is a mere village, more permittees seem to have a Ballston Spa address than the combined total of permittees with an address in any of the following: Manhattan, New York (as city in the address, not as state), Brooklyn, Bronx, Staten Island. The number of permittees in Ballston Spa is big as a percentage of the number of households there.
There are many permittees with addresses in prison towns such as Albion, Altona, Attica, Auburn, Beacon, Cayuga, Chateaugay, Coxsackie, Danbury, Elmira, Fishkill, Fulton, Gouverneur, Gowanda, Greene, Hudson, Mohawk, Moriah, Ogdensburg, Oneida, Ossining, Otisville, Ray Brook, Summit, Wallkill, Washington, Watertown, and Woodbourne.
Some entries in the state database may possibly indicate where a permittee works, as in the following examples.

John Cook on gawker.com on 8 January 2013 provided a 446-page list of people who got pistol permits from the NYPD. He wrote that he had gotten the list two and a half years earlier, which is about mid-2010.
Many lines in the pages below lack a street address or even a street name. No lines have longitude or latitude.
